Orbital diseases are uncommon and are best managed by experts in this complex anatomical location.  Oculoplastic surgeons are the recognized experts in orbital disease.  Benign and malignant tumors of the orbit can be asymptomatic or life-threatening.  Space-occupying lesions of the orbit require careful assessment and usually require an orbital CT scan.

In order to establish a diagnosis, an excision of the lesion or a biopsy is often necessary.  Over 50% of orbital tumors turn out to be benign. If cancer is present in the orbit, medical management usually is necessary following surgery.  Surgical approaches to the orbit are performed by a limited number of physicians in the state of Alabama.  Dr. Long has been performing and teaching the intricacies of orbital surgery for the last 20 years.
